In 2015, as executive architect, Standard Architects worked with Heatherwick studio and landed the project of Pier55-Hudson River Park, a magnificent land on the river that will revitalize a part of Hudson River Park with three acres of new public park space featuring lush greenery and a diverse array of world-class arts, educational and community programming. Design processes
In my role at Standard Architects, I led the design of seating for the Little Island on the Hudson River project. This widely celebrated endeavor involved exploring various seating arrangements for public use. I conducted multiple rounds of design mockups and collaborated with the engineering team for on-site testing. Additionally, I contributed to the functional design of the back-of-house areas, ensuring efficient and purposeful spaces to support seamless operations.
Design challenges
As an individual contributor during that period, I navigated challenges in balancing engineering requirements, construction costs, and the project's aesthetics for the project. Juggling these aspects while working on an impactful project posed a significant challenge. Moreover, it was a learning experience in conducting design research and collaborating with unfamiliar cross-functional teams. This multifaceted challenge not only enhanced my skills in project management but also underscored the importance of effective communication and collaboration in achieving successful outcomes.
The outcomes
Our design and construction administration efforts ensured the successful opening of the park on May 21, 2021
By 2023, the park had presented 572 shows and recorded over three million visitors
Design studies in collaboration with the program management team and landscape architects on the amphitheater and back of house, restrooms provided clear guidelines to the contruction, avoiding further delays in construction
